About Redhakhol Forest Division
The Redhakhol Forest Division, located in the Sambalpur district of Odisha, spans an area of approximately 2,050 Sq. Km and is rich in wildlife diversity. The division encompasses several dense reserve forests, including Hatidhara, Landakota, Suhani, Kholagada, Raila, and Tala, which serve as vital habitats for a wide range of fauna. Notably, the division is home to key wildlife species such as elephants, sloth bears, leopards, Indian bison (gaur), spotted deer, wild boars, and a variety of reptiles and bird species. Redhakhol lies within a critical elephant corridor, and frequent elephant movement is observed between adjoining forest ranges. To protect this biodiversity, the forest department actively engages Village Protection Committees (VPCs) in wildlife monitoring, rescue operations, and anti-poaching efforts. Redhakhol Forest Division also witnesses seasonal challenges such as forest fires and human-wildlife conflict, which are managed through coordinated response teams and awareness programs. The area plays a significant role in Odisha’s broader conservation landscape, contributing to both ecological balance and species preservation.
